Journey Towards Basic Education Curricular Reforms: 1946-2011

     "We draw an important distinction between assessing and evaluating. Assessing is gathering evidence of content knowledge and skills; evaluating is the case-by-case value judgement of the quality of performance". In this lesson I have learned that basic education is very important especially to those students who are on the preschool stage. Teachers are the one who will elaborate to the children how a basic education is to be taught. Back then the students will encounter the basic education for 10 (ten) years but now we have a new curriculum, the K-12 curriculum and they added 2 years on the basic education; which means that the basic education now 12 years in total.

         I realized that, basic education is important for the students, especially now that we have a new curriculum. DepEd is doing their best just to give a good education in this county. Though there are a lot of changes in the names of education but the value itself is just one.

           As a future teacher we must be aware on the educational system here in our country because we are in this profession to serve the Filipino people and to be a good citizen in this country. Basic education is the most important part of education and we must ensure that our children and students will undergo in this stage for them to have a better future.

CHAPTER 7

Historical Development of the Philippine Educational System

   "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history ha to teach". In this lesson I have learned that our history give a lot of development to the educational system of the Philippines. Our schools are supported by the government and so with the school of arts and trades, TESDA, and etc. They are the one who give finances to the school so that the certain school can stand and can give good education to the students who are willing to study. 

     I realized that we also have a lot of sponsors from the other countries, the United States of America and the Japanese. The also give part in giving things that will be used in the school like pencil, papers and etc. That would be a big help to them for helping us, even for a small help that would be a big help for the children who have big dreams.

     As a future teacher, we must tell our students our educational system and our history, for them to appreciate better the education here in our country. The efforts of our heroes and the previous reforms and innovations. We teachers should teach them the trace of the development of the Philippine educational system for them to be able them to appreciate the efforts of the teachers.

First Call for Children

    In this lesson I have learned that, the first call for children is the school. When they are still in early childhood they need to be in the school. That is why preschool teachers are there to teach those children. The right of the child to freedom of conscience religions shall be respected, as what they are respecting us adults.

    I realized that, every child has the inherent right o life and to live freely according to their age. They must be well take cared of by their parents and let them experience what really life is. Whether the child is mentally or physically disabled or not they should enjoy a full and decent life. In conditions which ensures dignity, self reliance and facilitate the child's active participation in the community.

    As a future teacher we teachers and parents are the one who are responsible in taking part of giving the child's needs. We have common responsibilities for upbringing and the development of the child. Parents or the legal guardians have the primary responsibility for the development of the child especially the attitude of the child. The best interest of the child will be their basic concerns.

      In this lesson I have learned that in a family respect to each other is present, we need to respect our parents and our children. Just like in the classroom we need to respect each other so that we can have peace inside. We are different from each other that is why respect is the key to have peaceful relationship. 
      I realized that being a teacher you also need to ask your students about their problems in their home. You need to know why that certain child is not going to school anymore, you are the one who will find out why. We don't know if that child is abused by their parents or relatives and that is the reason why he is not going to school anymore. There are a lot of cases like that here in our country.
      As a future teacher you need to be sensitive enough to your students. You need to give care to what is their problem and you will let them speak out with their problem.

Organizational Structure of the Department of Education Field Offices

     In this lesson I have learned that, Department of Education has a lot of field offices in which teachers give a lot of time studying for their major subject. They are allowed to have a lot of seminars about the subject that they handled and they are the one who will make test papers and other exams that the DepEd has.

      I realized that offices of DepEd is connected to the other parts of the Philippines and there are a lot of offices who will give their services to the people who need their help. 

       As a future teacher, we need to know the places where the connections of the DepEd for us to be informed. We are not just a teacher to teach we are also in this profession to be informed in those divisions of the Department of Education. 

Republic Act No. 4670

The Magna Carta for Public School Teachers

“Education is an essential factor in the economic growth of the nation as a productive investment of vital importance”. In this lesson I have learned that Magna Carta for Public School Teachers focuses from the hiring of teachers until the organizations and enforcement. We can read here the policies, the recruitment career, hours of work, salaries, health benefits, leave and retirement benefits, organizations of teachers and etc. It is very useful for the teachers to read this because they can understand the policies and benefits of being a public school teacher. Teachers are freely to join any organizations and to use their benefits and leaves whenever there is a emergency in their homes.
I realized that the government is giving a lot of importance to the teachers and they also give good salaries. But now a days teachers can no longer budget their salary especially if you join into loans. The salary that will be left from your ATM is not enough to feed your family. That is why teachers are very hardworking but at the same time they are doing their best just to teach well their students.
As a future teacher, we should abide all the policies that our country have for the teachers. Stability of employment and security of tenure shall be assured the teachers as provided under our existing laws. The government should also give increase of salary to the teachers because we all know that this profession is not that easy. They should give a lot of importance to the teachers in the country, its may be a way of saying thank you with the service that they gave to the country.

CHAPTER 6

The 1987 Constitution

“The State shall enhance the right of teachers to professional advancement”. In this lesson I have learned that Education has many faces, it has a lot of subjects that we can tackle to our students. In 1987 we call Education the ESTACS, or the Education, Science and Technology, Arts, Culture and Sports. Until they changed it to DECS, or the Department of Education Culture and Sports. But now a days Education has a new name its the DepEd or Department of Education. Our country is really giving a lot for education, they hired a lot of teachers and filled the slots of the schools that have lack of teachers. I can really say that Philippines is very competitive when it comes to education.

I realized that, becoming a teacher gives a lot of encouragement to the students to learn a lot from you. We thank a lot to our country that they are always minding the rights of the teachers and the students. They gave a lot of importance to the teachers and the welfare of the students to be in good hands of the government. They have a lot of programs that gives opportunities to the students who wants to finish their studies and it is a big help to the parents of the children and gives hope to the students who wants to finish studying.

As a future teacher, our constitution is always minding us teachers especially now that we have a newly elected President and we all know that he will not leave us teachers in all the incentives that we suppose to have. They understand how hard to be in this field, because you are here to help the students and to mold them into someone in the future. We are their second mother/father and they need us in order for them to reach their goals in life.

CHAPTER 5

Lesson 1

The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers

“There is no more noble profession than teaching. A great teacher is a great artist, but his medium is not canvas but the human soul”. In this lesson I have learned that teachers have the dignity and the moral values that vested on him the day that he choose the teaching field. It is very difficult if you as a teacher will not accept the challenges and brain crusher day just to provide your students the knowledge that they need to their future. I salute the teachers who really give their best just to share their knowledge to the students.

I realized that every teacher shall enjoy academic freedom and shall have the privilege of sharing the product of his researches and investigations provided that if the result are to declare policies of the state. Every teacher shall take part in every in every opportunities that is given to them. These opportunities are not given to all the teachers but it is given to the selected teachers that are capable enough.

As a future teacher, the Code of Ethics is the one that we must read especially if you are a education graduate. Teachers should understand the Preamble and the Articles that is wrote in the Code of Ethics because it is very useful for our profession that we choose. This is the noblest profession and if we choose to be in this field we will understand and put in our mind and heart the Preamble that we are a professional teachers who are willing to sacrifice our energy, time and money just to serve the Filipino children and to help them with their future.

1.3 Republic Act No. 9293

An act amending certain sections of Republic Act numbered 7836. Philippine teacher’s professionalization Act of 1994. I have learned that no person shall engage in teaching or will act as professional teacher as defined in this Act. Whether in the preschool, elementary or secondary levels. The person is a duly registered professional teacher, an a holder of a valid certificate of registration and a valid professional license or a holder of temporary permit.

I realized that a special permit may also be issued by the board to a person who has excelled and gained international recognition and is a widely acknowledge expert in his respective field of specialization. 

As a future teacher it is important for us to be informed with these laws and decree so that we will be very careful with our everyday work. We will be very careful with our words and acts towards our students and co-teacher’s. We will read these Acts so that we will be informed with the Sections and etc. that our country is declaring. It is not that easy to be a teacher, your attention is not just revolving in the four corners or the classroom but we must be informed with the laws of the country towards us teacher's.

1.2 Republic Act No. 7836

An act to strengthen the regulation and supervision of the practice in teaching the Philippines and prescribing a licensure examination for teacher’s and for other purposes. I have learned that teacher’s really have a big role in the country, they really give a big part in the country to the teacher’s. In Article II it says that the board examination of teacher’s was declared in this article and it gives the education graduates a opportunity to have license.

I realized that teaching is really a good profession because our country gives a big importance for us education graduates and more so they also give laws for teacher’s. The state recognizes the vital role of teacher’s in nation building and development through a responsible and literate citizens. Board examination of teacher’s adopt a code of ethical and professional standards for the practice of the teaching profession.

As a future teacher, the board shall look into the condition affecting the practice of teaching profession and whenever necessary. It adopt such measures as may be deemed proper for the enhancement and maintenance of high professional and ethical standards of he profession.

CHAPTER 4

                           Basic Laws on the Professionalization of Teaching

1.1 Presidential Decree No. 1006

“The policy goals should be to ensure that all children have access to skillful teacher’s to make the teaching profession more attractive to talented young adults, and to produce humane and intellectually lively learning communities for both students and teacher’s”. - Linda Darling - Hammond. Teaching can attract more skillful talents. In this lesson I have learned that, teaching profession can attract more talented children to produce more humane who wants to be a teacher. They say that teaching is not that easy and it really is, but if you are willing to help the children who wants to learn from you then teaching will never gets bored. It is just how a teacher teaches his students, that a subject can never gets dull it’s how a teacher explain a certain topic to his students that they can easily catch up that is what a good teacher is.

I realized that, there are a lot of laws that a teacher may face in choosing this profession. There a lot of decrees or RA’s that we must consider in choosing this field. It is a big challenge for us teacher’s that we will consider while teaching, the laws that we will not abide we will just think about our license of professional teacher. We all know that it’s not that easy to have a license that is why we will follow the laws in teaching profession.

As a future teacher I know understand how difficult to becoming a teacher. You are not just teaching inside the classroom but you are also thinking about yourself and your dignity. As I go through reading all of these I realized that teaching is no joke, and becoming one of this profession is such a rewarding opportunity for those teacher’s who give their best just to be a good teacher to their students and to the community.

Lesson 5

Bringing the World Into the Classroom Through Educational Technology

“Digitially mediated learning encompasses more than knowledge of new technology tools. Educators must be prepared to mediate learning through ever-evolving digital tools. Educators must prepare for facilitative roles that can harness these opportunities to best student advantage”. - Jane Bailey. Technologies for teaching is important especially now a days; it can give a big help to the teacher’s in making grades, test papers and researching for the lessons. For the 21st century teacher’s they are expected that they have the knowledge to use these technologies. But teacher’s are not expected to be 100% success in using these technologies.

I realized that technology is very important inside and outside the classroom. Either teacher’s or students must be knowledgeable enough to use these technologies. The use of technology in the classroom has never been more underscored. Technology provides the support to the solution of meaningful problems especially in the classroom.

As a future teacher, technology is really important because it can give a big help not just to us teacher’s but also to our students. It is important that a certain school can have a technologies for teaching so that teaching will be a lot easier for teacher’s. 

Lesson 4

Broadening Teaching Perspectives: Teacher Exchange Programs

“We cannot hold a torch to light another’s path without brightening our own. - Ben Sweetland”. To become a good teacher you must broaden your mind into some possibilities. In this lesson I have learned that becoming a teacher is not only by teaching well and lock yourself into the four corners of your classroom. There are some possibilities for you as a teacher, there are some programs for teacher’s who can study abroad and can give you more knowledge on the field that you choose. Opportunities of these programs knocks only once so if you as a teacher wants to broaden your mind in teaching or researching grab these programs.

I realized that, to broaden your mind is to broaden your teaching perspectives. Teacher’s must be very good in the field of teaching and these programs can give a big help for teacher's who wants to study abroad. There are a lot of programs that they can choose to study and those are the Teacher Exchange Programs. These programs can enhance the leanings of the teacher’s inside and outside the classrooms.

As a future teacher, if someday I will be given the chance to study abroad I will grab the opportunity because it is good for us teacher’s. It can help to broaden our minds into some opportunities that classroom cannot give. It can also give you much knowledge on the field that you choose to have. It is a good chance for us teacher’s to have this programs that the Department of Education allowed this for us teacher’s.

Lesson 3

Multicultural Diversity: A Challenge to Global Teacher’s

“All men are pretty much alike. It is only by culture that they are set apart. - Confucius”. Students are not the same, they don’t came from the same mold. In this lesson I have learned that each students have different attitudes and they will differ into cultures and races. We cannot expect that in our classroom we are all a believer of Roman Catholic Church, there are some that came from Islam, Muslims, and etc. We as a teacher must took charge with different kinds of situations everyday inside the classroom. Some students might be very bully to their classmate because of the color of the skin or with the language that they spoke. With this kind of situation we must be ready on how to deal with it.

I realized that, we are just different through our beliefs, religions, races, cultures and the language that we spoke, but inside us we are all human beings who knows how to get hurt and feel the pain that other people do to us. Teacher’s also may have different races, religions, beliefs but we are all the same, we are here to give service to the children who wants to learn and to gain knowledge from us, we are all the same; we are teacher’s.

As a future teacher, life may be so challenging especially when you are in the field of teaching. You must be very care full with your words and actions because inside the classroom we are all different from each other. Different from religions, races and beliefs that is why we are here teacher’s to give advises to our students when inside the classroom will create misunderstanding. We are here to supervise and give advises to the children.

Lesson 2

A Closer Look at the Education System of Selected Countries of the World

“Benchmarking is learning the best from the best practices of the world’s best educational systems”. In this lesson I have learned that, countries like Australia, China, Japan, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, New Zealand and of course Philippines have different educational system. They have multicultural education anchors on the diversity of learners. We are different from them, they a lot of them are into technologies and teacher’s will really attend seminars on how to use such technologies. Here in our country we are not really into technologies, a lot of teacher’s are still following the old fashioned way of teaching; the chalk talk method. Some are still making visual aides for their everyday lessons. But for the other country they practice their students to be more into technologies and I think its not that good practice tho.

I realized that our country is just like a left behind all of these technologies that a teacher may use in teaching everyday. Yes, we cannot deny the fact that technology can make our lives easy but it also has a bad side of it. I salute to those teacher’s who are very much devoted to stick into our educational system here in the Philippines. Though we are not that advanced when it comes to technologies but they are very devoted to teach the children into a simple way of teaching. With these we are very competitive enough to the other countries when it comes to education.

As a future teacher, I understand that there are some disadvantage when your students are not into technologies because we cannot deny the fact that technology is very important now a days. But teaching those children in a nice and simple way can really make a difference.

CHAPTER 3

Lesson 1

Global Education and the Global Teacher

“Benchmarking is learning the best from the best practices of the world’s best educational systems”. Teacher’s are he best motivators it either here in our country or outside the country. In this lesson I have learned that teacher’s will not just can teach here in our country but they also have the chance to teach outside the country. But teaching to the other countries can be very challenging because you are an alien with their educational system. Our educational system here in the Philippines and to the other countries have a big difference that is why teacher’s will undergo with a lot of seminars regarding with the educational system of the other country before they can teach there.

I realized that, global education can give a big opportunity to the teacher’s here in our country who wanted to experience the educational system of the other countries. This may seem impossible but us Filipinos will never say never, we are known to be very competitive that is why now a days there are a lot of Filipino teacher’s who decided to teach to the other countries.

As a future teacher, teaching to the other country is not my ambition, because I wanted to teach here at the country where I lived and I wanted to give my part to the students here who wanted to learn. If all of us will go to the other country just to teach then our country will break down. There will be no more teacher’s left for the young one’s who wanted to be successful in life in the future.

Lesson 4

Linkages and Networking with Organizations

“We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results”. School and community with collaboration with the public and private organizations. In this lesson I have learned that linkages and organizations are important for the schools, especially if they have programs to be made and the school needs the support of the public or the private organizations and linkages. They are willing to join forces in pursuing productive programs in beneficial with the students in that certain school.

I realized that school can enjoy linkages and networking activities with the help of international, local and national organizations. The can help a lot in cleaning the schools, giving ,materials fro the school and any assistance that a school may need. 

As a future teacher we are the one’s who will assist the linkages and organizations to be successful in giving such help in a certain school. Teacher’s are the one who can supervised to have a healthy relationship between the linkages and the school. That is one of the work of being a good teacher.

Lesson 3

School and Community Relations

“it takes a village to raise a child”. - African Proverb. The school and community are the main force that can create partnership and betterment of all. In this lesson I have learned that , school and community gives a big impact to the students especially to the children who are in the low class of the society. Children gain a lot from the community, it is the first school that they have before they enter into the real world of education, and it is the school itself. Parents are the teacher’s in home, and parents are the one who build a child's attitude and interest in going to school. Teacher’s are the one who will enrich the students experiences and attitude at home. Teacher’s are just the one that will continue to teach the children what they have started in home.

I realized that, community gives a big role in raising a child. No matter what the attitude of the parents may be but if your child has a bad attitude and maybe he adopted it from the community itself. Its either from the family or from the community that a certain child adopted that kind of traits or attitude. If a certain child is not doing his projects and assignments and maybe he adopted that kind of attitude from his parents or maybe he is influenced by his community.

As a future teacher, it is a big challenge for us in this kind of situation, you cannot force a child to listen to the lessons if he himself is not willing to do so. You cannot force a child to be active in the class discussion if he is not willing to be a part in the daily discussion. So as a future teacher that is the biggest problem that we may encounter but patience is a virtue and perseverance and willingness to teach is the only key to help those child who are dealing with those kind of problems.

Lesson 2

The 21st Century Teacher

“If we teach today as we taught yesterday we rob our children of tomorrow” - John Dewey. There are some types of teaching, the old fashioned way of teaching and the 21st century. In this lesson I have learned that as a 21st century teacher you must remain relevant, and interesting. In order for your students to understand well on the lessons that you’ve teached to them you must possess the sense of humor so that your students will not be bored in the class discussion. You as a teacher must know how to blend in with your students because a subject will not be dull if the teacher knows how to explain it.

I realized that becoming a 21st century teacher is very challenging, you must have the communication skills so that your students can understand well and also the parents can communicate well to you as a teacher to their child. You must also have the innovation skills, media and technology skills; of course as a teacher you must be into technologies because now a days life become easier because of the technology. You must also have the life and career skills, as a teacher you must possess these in order to survive in this 21st century and be able to contribute.

As a future teacher, we all know that becoming one is not that easy but we are here to do our best just to be one of the educator’s in this country. Maybe there are some people who don’t believe in us, who don’t believe that we can do and we can be a good teacher someday. But striving and learning to become one and be a part of this noble profession is a chance for us future teacher to say that we can do it, we can be a good teacher someday, and because of those people who don’t believe in us this is the way of telling them that we can be a good educator.

CHAPTER 2

 Lesson 1

The National Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS)

“The teacher is a diplomat and ambassador of tact and sensitivity, as he/she facilitates productive, positive interactions among the multiplicity of personalities, cultures, beliefs, and ideas.” In this lesson I have learned that, NCBTS spelled out the expectation of the teacher in the classroom and in the community. Each teacher must have skills satisfactorily functions in the classroom

I realized that being a teacher has a lot of things to do. One of these is to teach the students well and be a good example to them whether inside the classroom or outside the community.

As a future teacher we must be very careful with our words,actions and traits towards our students. They are our followers and they tend to imitate us teachers for what they see and what they hear from us. Especially the elementary students, they are very immature and they tend to imitate teachers because for them teachers are right.
